Bextra
Bextra (valdecoxib) is a prescription drug taken by patients
for the treatment of arthritis and acute pain. Like Vioxx
it is classified as a COX-2 inhibitor drug.
Data from recent studies shows those patients taking Bextra are at increased risk of suffering a heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular event. The drug also is linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Stevens Johnson Syndrome is an extreme allergic reaction and can be a life threatening condition as well. Symptoms of Stevens Johnson Syndrome include blistering, fever, cough, malaise, swelling and lesions of gums, tongue, or lips, and sores in the genital tract causing painful urination.
On January 10, 2005 the FDA sent Pfizer Inc. a letter warning them advertisements the company was using to promote Bextra were misleading to the public. In the letter the FDA said Pfizer Inc. had failed to disclose information on risks associated with Bextra in different advertising campaigns and had made claims about the effectiveness of the drug that could not be supported. The FDA claims Pfizer Inc. has violated provision of the U.S. Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
