The
Dallas Concilio of Hispanic Service Organizations
will unveil a Hispanic Role Model Program and
celebrate its 25th anniversary at a Wine Tasting
Festival Thursday at the Latino Cultural Center.
Florencia Velasco Fortner, the concilio's
chief executive, says the role model program will
encourage young Hispanic professionals to help
address Hispanic needs in the community.
The role models will work with nonprofits
and service providers, gaining experience that
can help them become nonprofit leaders.
The Dallas Concilio's mission is to enhance the
quality of life for Hispanics through community
partnerships, and the Wine Tasting Festival is
a celebration of 25 years of improving the lives
of Hispanics and others, spokeswoman Yvonne Alonzo
said.
Its accomplishments include:
• Helping 1,690 families through the Parent
Institute for Quality Education
• Creating the nationally recognized LIDER Diabetes program, an awareness and wellness campaign
• Encouraging 500 women to improve their
health through the Pasos
Saludables "Healthy Steps" program
• Enhancing the lives of 5,000 clients every
year.
The concilio is an umbrella organization for groups
that serve the Hispanic community.
It has more than 30 community partners
and maintains affiliations with the Center
for Nonprofit Management, Community
Council of Greater Dallas, National
Alliance for Hispanic Health and the National
Council of La Raza.
"Dallas Concilio staff and
volunteers engage local Hispanics in systematic
community planning for input into the design and
delivery of social, educational and health care
services," Ms. Alonzo said.
They also provide technical assistance
and cultural competence training to service providers,
she said.
Philip Ritter is honorary chairman
of the event.
Honorary Committee members are U.S.
Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Dallas; Dallas
City Council member Pauline Medrano; Dallas Independent
School District trustee Jerome Garza; Beatrice
Martinez; Jaime Ramon; Steve Flores; John Kacinski;
Chris Langmayer; and Gilbert Bailón, publisher
and editor of The
Dallas Morning News' Al Dia.
Event sponsors include:
• Compadres ($5,000) - Texas
Instruments Inc. and Southwest
Airlines Co.
• Amigos ($1,500) - Heygood, Orr, Reyes
& Bartolomei, KXAS-TV
(Channel 5) and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP.
The doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
Thursday, and the Wine Tasting 101 class starts
at 6. Ms. Fortner will speak at 7. The event will
also include tapas, a silent auction and entertainment
