Auto Accidents

Corporal Annet Goodyear received medical treatment for minor injuries after she took a hit from an oncoming vehicle just seconds after pushing a young girl out of the way. On Friday, February 4, Cpl. Goodyear was working her regular crossing guard shift, guiding students across the street when a car suddenly came speeding through. A bus camera captured the video below. The video shows the motorist as they blow through the crosswalk on Cecil Avenue as they bulldoze into Goodyear, right in front of North East Middle High School. According to the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office, the driver is facing numerous traffic violations, including negligent driving.

Call for Caution

It comes as no surprise that as Monday rolled around, Goodyear reported still being sore. Any human body that has undergone a hit from a 3,000-some-pound vehicle would be sore. However, she hopes that her story will push other motorists to be more alert while driving – especially in school zones.

Tips for Drivers

Motorists must take precautions in and around school zones. Although they’re some of the most basic driving tips, it’s important to remind motorists of safe driving behaviors. Here are some tips from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • Stay alert.
  • Watch for children might run between vehicles.
  • Be mindful of children at bus stops.
  • Put away your cellphone.
  • Slow down.
  • Obey school zone speed limit signs and all traffic rules.
  • Drive safely around school buses.
  • Drop off and pick up children in the designated areas.

Pedestrian Safety

As our children get older and begin taking on responsibilities that make them more independent, such as walking or riding their bikes to school, it is crucial to teach them tips that will keep them and their friends safe. Here are some tips TxDOT gives parents and their children:

  • Always use sidewalks. If there’s not a sidewalk, walk on the left side of the street facing traffic.
  • Cross the street at intersections or marked crosswalks. Look left, right and left again before proceeding.
  • Always obey crossing guards.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street. Never assume a driver sees you.
  • Look for traffic when stepping off a bus or from behind parked cars.
  • Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.
  • Don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes and ears off the road.
  • Follow all traffic rules, signs and signals.
