A Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) bus hit and killed a pedestrian in the Medical District of Dallas earlier this month. According to Fox4News, the victim was walking near the Dallas North Tollway near the Maple Avenue Bridge. Although DART police have not released the identity of the person, they did note that the pedestrian passed away as a result of the collision. It is unclear if the person was walking in the roadway or trying to cross the street; however, no one onboard the DART bus sustained injuries.
Did you know that in the United States, a pedestrian is killed in a vehicle crash every 107 minutes?
We recently touched on the rising number of Texan pedestrian accident fatalities and the plans the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is preparing to carry out since the release of atrocious 2020 statistics. The alarming concern to address the rising number of fatalities gives the initiative to remind drivers to yield the right of way to pedestrians and raise more awareness when it comes to safety on the roads.
Here are some alarming statistics according to data compiled by the US Department of Transportation:
- Most pedestrian accidents take place in urban and non-intersection areas.
- More than two-thirds of pedestrians killed are male and almost one-fifth of fatalities are of Hispanic origin.
- Saturday and Sunday have the highest probability for pedestrian accidents.
- The deadliest days of the year for pedestrian accidents are January 1st and October 31st.
Even with less traffic on Texas roadways since COVID-19, accidents and fatalities continue to rise.
It is hard to imagine that roadway fatalities in the United States have just become part of our daily norm. Car collisions and auto accidents have become written off as “accidents” or tragically unavoidable circumstances as opposed to an epidemic where thousands upon thousands of people are dying at an alarming rate.
The good news is, we have the power to change these statistics.
