Fort Worth Curbing Car Accidents Better than Dallas

Auto Accidents

Over the course of the last three years, Texas has taken the number one spot for traffic accident fatalities. Certainly, this is not an award any state would want to hold. With many metro areas in the state of Texas, it’s no wonder there are so many traffic accidents each year. Contrarily to the rise in accidents across the entire state, one metropolitan county is actually seeing a steady decline in accidents occurring.

Fort Worth and the entirety of Tarrant County Texas are seeing a decline in car accidents. In each of the last three years, Tarrant County is reversing the upward trend in car accidents. The trend began in 2018 with Tarrant County reporting 25% fewer accidents than their neighbor Dallas County. 2019 they saw an eye-opening decline while Dallas County reported a surge in car accidents. In 2019, Tarrant County had 37% fewer car accidents than Dallas County reported. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, both Dallas and Tarrant County saw decreases in their car accident numbers. Tarrant County saw a 14% decrease from their 2019 numbers and created a gap of 41% fewer accidents than Dallas County in 2020.

The Worst Offender in Texas

While Dallas and Tarrant County are both seeing sizable dips, there is no greater car accident nightmare than Harris County Texas. With twice as many accidents per year as Dallas County, Harris County is the worst place in Texas for dangerous driving. With 32,096 accidents in the Houston metro area, Dallas County looks like a much safer area to be on the road. However, diving further into the data presented by the Texas Department of Transportation Crash Records Information System, Dallas and Tarrant County have a very similar rate of crashes to population size as Harris County.

What is going to be the method to curb the number of accidents that occur in Texas? While the numbers have declined all across Texas in 2020, the number of accidents, injuries, and fatalities on the roads of Texas is still astronomically high. Will Tarrant County be able to keep its streak of lowering its number of car accidents year over year? Can Dallas County get closer to Tarrant County’s numbers? With new regulations being put in place by the Vision Zero traffic safety plan in Dallas, there is a possibility we can see a continued decrease in car wrecks in Dallas.
