Auto Accidents

It’s back and it’s slicker than ever.

Just like Punxsutawney Phil predicted – winter weather has returned, and it’s back in North Texas. Wednesday morning, Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) received a Winter Storm Warning that quickly turned problematic for local motorists driving through the sleet and freezing rain.

Fort Worth

According to WFAA, the ambulance company that services Fort Worth, MedStar, responded to 74 crashes – thirty-six of which took place between 3:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. Thirty-four of the crashes required treatment at nearby hospitals, including nine rollover crashes.

A crash involving multiple 18-wheelers occurred on Interstate-30 in west Fort Worth at Linkcrest Drive around 7:00 a.m. Quickly thereafter, the North Freeway Tollway (I-35W) Expres Lanes required shutdowns in both directions, but Fort Worth Fire Department noted I-35W remained open in both directions.

Similarly in Dallas, between midnight and 7:49 a.m., there had already been eighteen accidents the Dallas Fire Department responded to.

By, 12:33 p.m. Dallas Fire Department reported 18 motor vehicle accidents where crews were spread out at one time. And less than two hours later, Dallas Police Department (DPD) reported 96 minor accidents, 136 major accidents, and 78 freeway accidents since midnight Wednesday.

But things did not slow down – The City of Dallas reported there were so many crashes, the city is currently experiencing a shortage of tow trucks. The data provided is not exact, but DPD responded to roughly 450 accidents as of 5 o’clock Wednesday evening.

Slow Down

Please slow down. With Winter Weather Storm predictions ongoing through Thursday evening, it is necessary for everyone to use caution and drive to conditions.

We all know Texans have a reputation for being fearless, but accidents are sure to happen in 0.10 – 0.20″ of ice-covered roadways. Only drive if you absolutely must.
