Everyone knows it is against the law to text and drive. Law enforcement agencies all over the country are cracking down on punishing drivers for looking at their phones instead of the road. Despite law enforcement becoming more strict regarding phone use behind the wheel, many drivers still feel the need to check their phones in the car.
To show drivers what their actions can do, Volkswagen sponsored a PSA that aired in Hong Kong. Volkswagen had real people in a movie theater watching what they thought was an interesting preview for a movie. They movie theater had set it up so everyone in he theater would receive a text at the same time. When everyone looked down to check their phones, the video showed just how suddenly a car accident can happen when drivers aren’t paying attention.
Watch the PSA here:
In 2011, at least 23% of car accidents were caused by cell phone use. Texting while driving can increase your chances of an accident by up to 23 times. In Texas alone, there were 94,943 car accidents caused by texting while driving in 2013. These crashes resulted in 459 deaths and 18,576 serious injuries.
The Volkswagen PSA may seem harsh to some, but it puts in perspective how much can happen when you take your eyes off the road for a minute. Next time your phone goes off while driving, let your friends wait. No text is worth the damage it can cause to yourself and others.
