NBC5 reports a fiery head-on collision that’s left several families grieving after six students and one faculty member from the University of the Southwest (USW) passed away. In addition, the driver and 13-year-old passenger of the oncoming Dodge 2500 pick-up truck also passed away. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the fatal collision occurred at 8:17 p.m. on FM 1788 north of SH 115 in Midland when the pick-up struck the Ford passenger van that was transporting USW men and women golf teams.
The USW team was set to play in a tournament in Midland on Wednesday, March 16, and scheduled to tee off the following morning against Midland College.
The University of the Southwest issued the following statement Wednesday after news of the crash broke:
“The University of the Southwest can confirm that there has been a fatal bus accident involving the USW men’s and women’s golf teams. The university is currently attempting to notify family members of those involved in the accident. Counseling and religious services will be available to students, faculty, and staff on campus. The university will continue to provide additional information as it becomes available.“
