Labiaplasty and Vaginal Hood Reduction Malpractice Lawsuits

What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty Malpractice Lawsuits

The results of an study recently released by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), which surveyed cosmetic procedures in 106 countries, shows significant growth in a surprising areas of cosmetic surgery: Labiaplasty and Clitoral Hood Reductions.

Labiaplasty is a procedure which reduces the length of the labia minora, when a woman experiences discomfort from chaffing or twisting when exercising or feels self-conscious about the length of her labia. In 2016, the number of labiaplasty procedures performed increased by a whopping 45%, with 13,266 performed in the United States.

According to a study released in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, the reasons women seek out these cosmetic procedures are largely aesthetic, and they are often misinformed by various sources regarding the risks and side-effects they may see after the procedure.  When labiaplasty has gone wrong, the patient receives less than desirable results. Once the labia are cut, there is no putting them back.

Botched Labiaplasty Procedures On The Rise

One of the most shocking facts that the researchers discovered was that vaginal “lifts” and labiaplasty are being recommended for younger patients in recent years. In one case, the researchers noted that a girl of just 11 years old was referred for a labiaplasty even though her anatomy was within normal limits and did not cause her discomfort.

Doctors and medical providers advertising these procedures often utilize a mix of correct and incorrect information regarding what the expected results could be. The vast majority of marketing efforts promise women they will be able to experience more sexual pleasure if they undergo labiaplasty or vaginal tightening surgeries.

Some recent trends are being driven by consumers.  For example - When women with normal genitals were referred to one clinic, they were told their appearance was normal and asked if they would like a referral to counseling, which might be able help them with their body image and self confidence. While some of those women took the counseling referral, over 40 percent of that clinic's female patients still wanted to pursue surgery through any means necessary.

Currently, studies show many of these procedures can actually reduce sensation, and their long-term effects are mostly unknown. Several lawsuits are pending against providers of vaginal rejuvenation procedures.  The result of a botched labiaplasty may not only be physical damage to the labia, but psychological damage to the patient as well.

At this time, there are relatively few doctors across the United States, even the world, who have the knowledge, skill, and experience to perform a high-quality, aesthetically pleasing labiaplasty - or the additional procedures in conjunction with a labiaplasty which may be required to obtain the correct and desired results.  Failed labia reconstruction is usually a result of unqualified physicians performing the labiaplasty or labia minora reduction but can also be a result of poor cosmetic vaginal surgery techniques.

Many unfortunate women are left with outer vaginal deformities due to a botched labiaplasty surgery. These women are so devastated with their failed labia reduction procedure that they feel mutilated and often have resulting pain and tenderness of the genital region. They often feel that they have been robbed of their femininity.

Labiaplasty Malpractice Lawsuits

Complications may occur with any cosmetic surgery, even if performed by the most careful surgeons. However, the botched labiaplasty surgery result is frequently caused by the technique used, an inexperienced surgeon, or a surgeon who is not a perfectionist seeking an ideal aesthetic and functional result. This is considered medical malpractice.
