Texas’ Most Wreck-Prone Intersections per TxDOT’s 2025 Crash Data
In the year 2025, the Texas Department of Transportation recorded 617,930 crashes, with 164,063 of them occurring at one of the more than 82,000 unique named road intersections across the state. That’s just over one out of every four accidents in total, and that also means every single intersection in the state of Texas saw an average of 1.8 crashes last year.
After reviewing data compiled by the Texas Department of Transportation, we have compiled a list of some of the most dangerous intersections in the state, including those that are the most prone to crashes, as well as those that saw the most injuries and even the most fatalities.
The 5 Most Crash-Prone Intersections in Texas
1. General Bruce Dr. & H K Dodgen Loop (SOUTH) – Temple, TX

Total crashes: 77
Total injuries: 39
Running away with the title of “Most Crash-Prone Intersection in Texas” for the year 2025 is the south meeting of General Bruce Dr. and H K Dodgen Loop. These two roads (both of which serve as frontage roads for freeways that run through the area) actually cross twice, with General Bruce (the frontage road for I-35) running through Temple from north to south and H K Dodgen (the frontage road for TX-36) looping clear around the majority of the city.
The numbers included here are for the southern intersection only, which far and away eclipsed both its northern twin and any other intersection in the state with a whopping 77 recorded accidents in 2025. However, considering the volume of accidents, its 39 recorded injuries is a comparatively low number compared to some other entries on this list.
2. Central Expressway & University Dr. – McKinney, TX

Total crashes: 58
Total injuries: 45
Central Expressway is the frontage road serving US-75, one of the main north/south routes traversing the eastern side of Dallas and its neighboring suburbs. University Drive, also known as US-380, is a major east-west thoroughfare spanning 673 miles from Greenville, TX, all the way out to I-25 in San Antonio… New Mexico.
Their intersection in the heart of McKinney is particularly difficult because of US-75 running directly overhead, splitting the north and south directions of Central Expressway. This creates one-way streets on both sides of the road, and the overhead freeway can make it difficult to see signals far enough in advance, particularly during sunrise and sunset hours. When combined with U-turn lanes merging and splitting from turn lanes, you have a recipe for confusing navigation, particularly for first-time visitors.
On average, there was slightly over one crash at this intersection every week.
3. AW Grimes Blvd. & Louis Henna Blvd. – Round Rock, TX

Total crashes: 53
Total injuries: 26
Much like several of the other entries in our top five list, this is another instance of a major, high-speed street crossing under a major freeway, intersecting its two one-way frontage roads in the process.
One of the factors that could contribute to this intersection being so crash-prone is its sheer size. A.W. Grimes Boulevard is four lanes wide in each direction, and Louis Henna, the frontage road for TX-45, is a further four lanes wide on each side of the freeway. Traveling through on Grimes requires you to pass through a wide intersection, under the freeway, and then through another equally wide intersection to continue onward. Should those lights shift, it could be easy to get caught in the intersection when it changes.
4. Eastex Fwy & Lucas Dr. – Beaumont, TX

Total crashes: 49
Total injuries: 14
This is another example of a high-traffic avenue meeting the frontage road for a major highway. But unlike some of the other entries on this list, Eastex and Lucas is a situation where there is perhaps too much traffic trying to squeeze through a series of fairly narrow passageways through this intersection.
Eastex Fwy runs two lanes wide for most of its span through this corridor, only widening out to three or four lanes to allow for dedicated right turns or a U-turn lane. Lucas Dr. widens out to three lanes at this intersection to allow for dedicated left-turn lanes under the freeway overpass, but those lanes quickly end, potentially trapping drivers in the wrong lane if they aren’t prepared. With high traffic volume, it’s also easy to see how a traffic jam could push someone to run a red light or accidentally block an intersection when traffic suddenly stops.
5. Morris Ave. & South TX-288 – Manvel, TX

Total crashes: 46
Total injuries: 5
If you were to make the roughly 30-minute drive south from Houston down to the small suburb of Manvel, you would likely have to pass through one of the most crash-prone intersections to do it.
Morris Avenue is the portion of Highway 6 that runs through Manvel as the main road, connecting it to its neighbors of Arcola and Alvin. If you’re making the journey south along TX-288, you’ll need to take an inconspicuous exit that leads you to Highway 6. About a quarter of a mile after the ramp merges to the frontage road, you hit the intersection, which is fairly wide, but has a lot of turn lanes. About 500 feet before that is a driveway that leads to a shopping center with an H-E-B market, which may cause traffic to quickly and suddenly slow down.
As a result, this intersection saw its fair share of accidents—46 in total. However, the majority of those accidents were fairly minor fender-benders, with only five total injuries happening across all of them.
Other Interesting Intersection Observations
While these intersections did not make the top 5, they are noteworthy for some other interesting statistical anomalies.
- Cane Island Rd. and Parkside Dr. in Katy recorded 36 crashes in 2025 (ranked #16 statewide), but also recorded zero injuries in that span. It is one of just four intersections in the entire state of Texas to record more than 15 accidents and zero injuries.
- Intersections involving Loop 289 in Lubbock accounted for four entries on this list (25, 26, 30, and 38), making it arguably the most dangerous road for intersection crashes in the state. All combined, TxDOT reported a whopping 265 crashes involving Loop 289 intersections in Lubbock.
- Several small cities across the state saw a high concentration of crashes at one intersection. This concentration suggests that targeted infrastructure adjustments (re-timing traffic signals, adding turn lanes, or adjusting signage) could have a high impact on overall safety.
- Morris & South (Manvel): 46 out of 175 total crashes (26.2%)
- Gun Barrel Ln. & Main St. (Gun Barrel City): 16 out of 60 total crashes (26.7%)
- Bandera & Wurzbach (Leon Valley): 33 out of 160 total crashes (20.6%)
- Waco’s I-35 frontage road (Jack Kultgen Expressway) has two intersections in the top 20 (#12 and 18). Its intersection with 18th St. is notable for being the most injury-prone intersection on the list, garnering 39 injuries in 35 crashes. In other words, on average, a crash here would injure more than one person. Crashes on this road were also roughly 14% more likely to produce an injury than crashes anywhere else in Waco.
- While the city does not appear in the top 50 at all, McAllen’s intersections injure nearly twice as many people per crash as the statewide average—the highest injury rate of any city in Texas by a wide margin. McAllen intersections produced 818 accidents and a total of 898 injuries, a rate of 1.1 injuries per crash. No other city with more than 300 combined crashes had a rate even above one injury per crash.
