The administration estimated that approximately 31,720 people died on U.S. roadways last year through September.

American Attitude

According to The Washington Post, the increase in deaths has defied simple explanations and efforts in reversing it. Federal data from the Administration show traffic fatalities increased in 38 states during the first nine-month period after COVID-19 first spread. Two states were flat, and the other ten states declined.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasizes the department’s mission to provide federal guidance, as well as billions in grants, to encourage states to lower speed limits and embrace safe road design. Bike and bus lanes, better roadway lighting, and more crosswalks – plus the additional strategy of implementing speeding cameras.
