Upward of 3,500 people showed up at the Kerrville-Kerr County Airport for “Airport Race Wars 2” on October 23 for an “action packed, family-friendly day,” with a touch of reckless driving. The organized entertainment involved drivers racing an eighth of a mile as they competed for over $8000 in total prizes when one driver was nearing the end of the strip and veered off course. According to Kerrville police, the driver lost control and slammed into parked vehicles, as well as striking the crowd of spectators.
The motorist, Michael Gonzales, was driving the 1990 Ford Mustang that crashed into and claimed the lives of three people from the event. Two boys, ages 6- and 8-years-old passed away in the crash that day. However, Rebecca Cedillo, 46, has now also passed as a result of injuries suffered at the event. Another woman, 27-year-old Mary Kate Walls, recently reported to have improved from critical to fair condition. The majority of the other injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.
Water-filled plastic barriers lined the course of the runway; however, the barriers did not extend past the finish line. Whatsmore, spectators could get within approximately 15 feet of the track to watch the race in lawn chairs in lieu of stands. Gonzales was approaching the end of the strip when he lost control of the Mustang.
