May be more likely to cause life threatening bleeding
Pradaxa® (Dabigatran) is a prescription anti-coagulant (blood thinner) drug which was designed to prevent blood from coagulating, or clotting. Pradaxa is usually prescribed to prevent the formation of blood clots that block the large veins in the body, which is called Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and stroke.
There are several anti-coagulant medications on the market and the use of any of these drugs can present dangerous adverse reactions or side effects. On the one hand, the formation of blood clots inside the veins or heart, can be extremely dangerous, even fatal. On the other hand, when a person is injured and blood is flowing outside its normal and customary paths, the property of clotting to stop bleeding is also important. The failure of someone’s blood to clot in such circumstances can also be extremely dangerous, even fatal.
Pradaxa® side-effects have prompted lawsuits and safety advisories in various countries and have led to labeling updates in Europe and the United States. The FDA recently required the German pharmaceutical manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim to update its Pradaxa® label after receiving a large number of adverse event reports from consumers. The January 2012 label change added minimal information regarding the dangers of bleeding events and the lack of a reversal agent for Pradaxa. The drug remains devoid of a “black box warning” or an FDA recall.
People who have lost a family member who took Pradaxa® are working with our attorneys in order to file lawsuits and seek compensation for medical bills and the pain and suffering associated with their loss.
The most serious side effects of Pradaxa® are:
