What is Valsartan®?
An ARB (angiotensin-receptor blocker) prescribed to patients with high blood pressure (hypertension), congenital heart failure, and to treat symptomatic heart failure. It was also used to lower the risk of death after a heart attack. Valsartan® is taken orally in the form of film-coated capsules. The drug was manufactured by Chinese company Zheijang Huahai Pharmaceuticals (ZHP).
Valsartan® Side Effects
In July 2018, the FDA issued its largest class 1 recall after random testing revealed traces of chemical N-nitrosoimethylamine (NDMA) in the medication. NDMA is a probable carcinogen that has been linked to increases risk of kidney, colorectal, pancreatic, stomach, and bladder cancer. Though the lawsuit was filed only last year, claims have been made that contamination may have been taking place for years, displaying a disregard for safety procedures at the plant where the medication was being manufactured.
Other potential side effects:
- Issues with liver, kidneys, and lungs
- Liver damage
- Abdominal cramps
